Content Strategy for Events can be FUN!
Today I interviewed MN Secretary of State Mark Ritchie as part of our content strategy for the National Civic Summit this July 15-17, 2009 in Minneapolis, MN. This is my second interview with Mark and I will have several more over the coming weeks to take the key messages about the event and the campaign into individual “campaign soundbites” so they can be translated across several social media venues.

I already “biz love” interviewing Mark because he is an expert at message creation. Specifically, I can share with him what we are hoping to convey and minutes later you’ll see a polished and friendly translation on the screen. I can tell you after prepping celebrities and business leaders for media sessions and red carpet, few are this skillful.
Today’s interview is what I would consider an outtake kind of interview, with the audience being able to see the true personalities behind the messaging. I could’ve chosen to repackage or polish this, but in viewing it, I felt it was a great translation of the natural excitement around this project. The team is truly engaged and candid with one another- a great combination to build a successful campaign and support grassroots civic initiative engagement across America. So have a laugh with us- it is the beginning of a long weekend after all!
Stay tuned for more from Mark Ritchie, for Nate Garvis, VP of Government Affairs- Target Corporation, and Sean Kershaw, Executive Director of the Citizens League. I am looking forward to my social on the street chats with all of them- each are great communicators with unique styles.
Watch our social content strategy as it unfolds, and see it in its entirety at the National Civic Summit when we culminate the campaign with a National Tweetup Party sponsored by Target, and it will be part of our Civic Resource Toolkit so we can share our Case Study with civic organizations across the country. Social Marketing is still very new, and using it in conjunction with event & cause messaging it like I tell my social marketing colleagues “living on the edge of the wilderness.”
Thanks for your “social time”

Self Publishing Interesting Event-related Content

Hire Professionals to Create Content- On Impact & Friends on Wired for 2020 Event Content Stage
The Event Planning/Building world is changing along with the rest of the world. Social Media venues provide new platforms for promotional and user generated content to be infused into your event’s marketing strategy.
Historically we knew adding celebrities and VIPs of all sorts, created media placement opportunities like cause alignments and red carpet photo oppportunities.
Today, social media venues like You Tube Channels, Flickr Photo Collections and Twitter Conversation Streams provide new ways to promote that viral conversation with your core audience, and with the general population you are looking to reach.
You Tube – can be effectively used in two primary ways:
- Your Promotional Content- like commercials and psas, you can create video message vignettes that promote and inform about your event.
- User Generated Content – motivating your core team and stakeholders to create content that can add to the viral nature of your campaign- creating a more true and diverse conversation.
Flickr – provides validation and level one community involvement through:
- Providing the ability to create sets and collections of the photo content your event or organization has on hand. If you take the time to label, describe and tag each image specifically, you will highly impact your organic search, and the engagement surrounding your event.
- Showing that you are who you claim through photos of all the great thing you have done or are doing to build the event and or organization.
Twitter – telling the world about what you are publishing:
- Create a dedicated Twitter account to create a conversation within a specific psychographic & target groups.
- Create a hashtag campaign “#youreventname” so that you can build an audience, and so that your stakeholders can find the conversation about your event or organization.
Clearly, video sharing, photo sharing and microblogging are new era event promotion tools that any event or organization can employ with some creativity and effort.

Social Wendy Interviews David Meerman Scott at SxSWi
David Meerman Scott Interview from SxSWi
Social Wendy and TechNet Blogger Matt Hester interview World Wide Rave & New Rules of PR Author David Meerman Scott.
I had the chance to interview David Meerman Scott at SxSWi- (that’s South by Southwest Interactive for those of you new to Social Marketing). My colleague & master TechNet blogger Matt Hester and I sat down with David and talked so long, frankly, we thought we would break it down into bite-sized video snacks that can be “consumed” over 5 mini webisodes this week.
This was truly one of the highlight of SxSWi for me as David is likely the most published Social Marketing practitioner on the planet, with his first book- the New Rules of Marketing & PR now translated into 24 languages. We caught up with David midst his busy World Wide Rave book promo tour which included his reading at SxSWi. What was fun about the reading was that in true Word-of_Mouth expert form, David and his publisher, Wiley, had created a free- limited time Kindle download- which of course was a great example of what David practices and shares about creating a “world wide rave“.
I hope you enjoy the episodes as much as we did, chatting with David. Thanks again Matt for your video expertise- and the fun week creating content at SxSWi!

Blog Posting & Content Creation- Social Media Memories
You will notice that is my second blog post outside of getting my Flickr account connected to the blog to spotlight my posts with the fun photo content I collect at events and for client projects. Their content creation is one of my favorite things to do- it really allows their experience of an event or moment to live on. I believe this is one of the best things about social media, the ability to share and continue experiences through content.
Have a great day- Social Wendy

Using Flickr to Support Your Social Marketing Campaign Development-
Quick Tip from SocialWendy
One of the key tactics you can use in creating thought leadership is creating great “interesting to other people” content. A primary tactic is capturing the content as it happens- most content can’t be recreated because the moment is gone. If you have been savvy and have captured content for use in a social marketing campaign, you will want to “house it” in a convenient way to use it to support your campaigns.
I like Flickr for saving collections of photos and videos of client projects and examples of my work. It allows people who are referred to me to “check me out” before they pick up the phone to explore opportunities. Now we are both saving time and money.
A Quick Tip from SocialWendy
WordPress allows you to link directly to your Flickr (& Twitter accounts) page in a simple Widget tool in your dashboard. Here’s the link that comes from your Twitter account so it “recognizes” your WordPress Blog account.
