New Social Marketing Strategies for National Events

National events are looking to extend the event experience for their attendees by starting early online.  As sponsors and attendees are scrutinizing the various event choices available, they are looking online to sample the experience of what each event has to offer.  As I have shared previoiusly, here is where content capture onsite will prove valuable in translating the excitement and event vibe for potential participants.

Having the right mix of social marketing tactics in your event strategy, at minimum, a Twitter, Flickr and You Tube strategy are essential components to launching your national event.  Adding the other 4  core social strategy components, Linked In, Community, Blog, and Social Bookmarking are beneficial as well, but should be used based on the goals and objectives of the event.

Creating the strategy is only the beginning… educating and training your virtual and core leadership teams are critical success factors to your social marketing event strategy.  When your team understands what you are trying to accomplish with each event tactic whether marketing related or otherwise, you will succeed in accomplishing the event objectives.

While the expense of a grassroots social marketing effort isn’t expensive to an event, monetarily speaking, you will need a competent team to get your strategy live, and keep it live.  That means, understanding the social media choices, defining the right social marketing plan, creating the team, and launching the strategy with them.  Then, of course, the weekly strategy & update sessions to ensure your plan stays on track to support the development of your event.

Using volunteer and intern teams are an affordable way for a nonprofit or local event to get involved, but strong leadership and defined metrics are then key to your ongoing success with nonpaid staff.

The upside is that positive energy and enthusiasm from a committed team is contagious and crosses over into the overall event planning and execution.

The Ashton- CNN Challenge Changes Twitter Forever

Twitter - Social Wendy terms Today's Virtual Gathering

Any one watching the Social Media & Marketing trends is aware of how Ashton Kutcher challenged CNN Breaking News that he could get to 1M Twitter followers before they could.  This set of a chain of events, some promotional, some the simple result of the challenge.  Twitter awareness, over capacity messages, and general interest skyrocketed and put Twitter and the early adopters who have been actively “conversating” with each other center stage. Eager American eyeballs are watching and now truly wanting to learn how to participate and capitalize on the current Twitter trend.

Trend Right- We had already planned our Wired for 2020 Event Tweetup

  for that Weekend

Last weekend we hosted the Wired for 2020 Event at the Mall of America.  As I was hired to develop the event for the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota to support ongoing mentor engagement communications and development, my firm created an event as the centerpiece to the year-long social marketing campaign. The event was a great success in many ways one of which was continuing to break ground on how social tools are being used to generate interest and activity around causes.  In this case increasing mentoring in Minnesota.

  Our Tweetup and more…

Not just a group of folks Tweeting… but we incorporated blogging, Flickr, and You Tube content development in our event day and beyond promotional plan.  Our Gustavus Adolphus Research Intern Team was lead by Eric Raarup, Inetium, in their content generation activities.

From interviews, photos, audio recording and prizing participants for their contributions (at the Mall of America), we were able to capture the stories of the day and no longer rely on traditional media to “cover” our event.  Although they were present as well and very interested in our effort.  My colleague Chris Potenza had connected with the Minnesota Vikings, Timberwolves and Wild professional sports teams who were kind enough to support the event day promotion ensuring mentors and mentees would have fun and learn about new technologies and ways to communicate.

Our Tweetup was part of our Interactive Labs in the West Market of the Mall of America.  The Interactive Labs featured experts from several interactive agencies around the Twin Cities who shared with caring adults and youth about the various new media and social tools available to youth today.  The Tweetup provided the “real life” translation of how social media and social applications are changing how we communicate in business and personally. We are becoming our own content providers or “publishers” if you will- much like David Meerman Scott refers to in his “World Wide Rave” book.

Just 3 Days Later… reality check

The Executive MBA Reunion at the University of St. Thomas

I attended an all EMBA Cohort reunion at the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas.  After reconnecting with colleagues and the faculty, we sat down to hear from Dean Christopher Puto about the state of the state… and of course, I pulled out my handheld and started recording.  My colleague, started to giggle, and I knew that I was likely one of the few “early adopters” in the room so I kept on going.  After his talk, I began to upload the photos I had taken during the reception onto my notebook and a few people came over to see what was “going on”.  The conversation grew and shortly became the centerpiece of the activity in the room when I was invited to the microphone to lead a training session on “tweeting”…  not only was it fun, but people were highly engaged & interested in really understanding how to be part of the conversation that is happening on Twitter not just “how do I tweet”.  It was like preaching to the choir- very fun!  My colleague Lisa Edstrom even added it to the Mind Map Mixer wall mural- check it out below:
